AfriForum helps Doringkruin neighbourhood watch to cleanup area

The residents of Doringkruin in Klerksdorp enjoy the cleanliness of their residential area and this is all thanks to their own neighbourhood watch in collaboration with the local AfriForum branch.

From the beginning of February, low-hanging branches were cut in Muranti Road, Knoppiesdoring Road and Soetdoring Avenue. The grass on the sidewalks in Muranti Road was cut and they are busy cleaning the gutters and curbs there as well.

On the corner of Russel Street, the grass was so high that it was impossible to see oncoming traffic. The corner has now been cut open, which improves visibility and safety. Herbicide was sprayed on the sidewalks of empty plots to control the growth there. The small thornbush trees that had sprung up everywhere on the sidewalks were cut and herbicide was administered. Of this, 3,5 hectares have already been treated. The beautiful trees in the right places have been neatly pruned. Altogether 4,7 hectares of grass were cut during this time and 50 bags of rubbish were picked up and removed.

“This project is proof that when a community joins hands and stands up for their living space, a remarkable difference can be made. The AfriForum branch plans to soon establish a full-time neighbourhood team, which will be making a difference in the entire town. The most important thing is that residents raise their hands,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Mooi River.

“AfriForum is happy to join hands with those who are willing to make a difference in the community. We joined hands with Doringkruin and a very nice project gained momentum from that. It is our great desire and vision that the whole of Klerksdorp will do what is happening in Doringkruin in their own neighbourhoods,” says SW Scott, AfriForum’s Chairperson of the Klerksdorp branch.

Residents who wish to make contributions or require more information on how to support the project can contact Ockert Botha at 083 453 0373. To join AfriForum’s Klerksdorp branch, contact Scott at 082 806 7484.
