Terrible service delivery in Tswaing Municipality: AfriForum calls on Premier to intervene

AfriForum has made an urgent appeal to Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, the Premier of Northwest, to intervene in the service delivery and infrastructure crisis currently unfolding in the Tswaing Local Municipality. According to the civil rights organisation, the state of disrepair in Ottosdal, Delareyville, and Sannieshof in particular – combined with the municipality’s inability to rectify the situation – has serious consequences for residents’ health, safety, dignity, and quality of life.

AfriForum has repeatedly drawn the municipality’s attention to the extensive decay of these towns and the associated risks and even offered to formally provide assistance through a cooperation agreement. The request for entering into a memorandum of understanding was rejected and attempts to raise concerns regarding service delivery and infrastructure with the municipality have been ignored. AfriForum therefore considers the Premier’s intervention in the situation to be essential.

In a letter to the Premier, the organisation requests that an urgent meeting be convened between AfriForum and the Premier (or a senior municipal delegation) and that visits to the affected towns be arranged so that the Premier can witness the state of disrepair firsthand. Furthermore, AfriForum demands the drafting of a detailed recovery plan for service delivery; an investigation into the possibility of provincial intervention or oversight at the municipality; and the assurance that service delivery or infrastructure issues posing urgent health and safety risks will be treated as an immediate priority.

Persistent issues such as sewage in the streets, illegal dumping, unreliable refuse removal, poor landfill management, dilapidated roads, and a poor and unreliable water supply are among the major problems residents face daily.

JP Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland, believes residents cannot endure these conditions indefinitely while complaints, promises and requests for corrective action go unanswered.

“We are not asking for yet another meeting where promises are made but no change is effected. We are calling for visible provincial leadership, accountability and measurable intervention, because the residents of Ottosdal, Delareyville, and Sannieshof deserve efficient and reliable basic municipal services and infrastructure,” Nel explains.
