Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum teams use 3 tons of tar to repair a massive pothole in front of Laerskool Pretoria-Oos

On 10 September, AfriForum’s Greater Pretoria East neighbourhood team, together with the Tuks and Sol-Tech branches of AfriForum Youth, repaired a massive pothole in front of Laerskool Pretoria-Oos. Three tons of asphalt were used to fix the hole, which had been delaying traffic and posing a danger to road users for nearly three months.

The extensive project was undertaken by a team of 7 neighbourhood team members and approximately 10 students. Two vehicles were used to transport the asphalt and equipment to the site. Due to the size of the pothole, a road roller also had to be hired to compact the asphalt properly and evenly. The repairs amounted to approximately R20,000, and the costs were covered by AfriForum’s Greater Pretoria East branch.

This year, AfriForum is focusing on the well-being, safety, and progress of schools. It was therefore important to urgently address this safety risk, which was right on the doorstep of Laerskool Pretoria-Oos.

“Skole is spilpunte in ons gemeenskappe en ons kan nie wag vir die regering om na ons kinders te kyk nie. Ons moet sélf inspring om slegte omstandighede te verbeter,” sê Maree van den Berg, woordvoerder van AfriForum.

“This primary school is right on Tukkies’ doorstep, and it is very important for young people to learn, as young adults, to get involved in their communities,” says Hanno Koster, youth leader at AfriForum Youth.
