Germiston branch assists during fire at Boksburg business

AfriForum’s Germiston branch helped to fight a fire at Boksburg Cash & Carry in Leeuwpoort Street, Boksburg, on Thursday, 3 September.

The fire was spotted at approximately 13:40 after a member of AfriForum’s Germiston branch saw smoke near his workplace in Market Street. He decided to investigate and, upon arriving at the premises, observed the flames.

A fire truck was already on the scene and doing everything possible to bring the fire under control. However, the fire truck had come directly from another fire and consequently no longer had a full tank of water.

AfriForum’s Germiston branch coordinated with fire department personnel to strategically remove stock stored on pallets. The aim was to prevent the fire from spreading further and to facilitate the firefighters’ work. The branch also deployed its own water tanker to help bring the fire under control.

Firefighting support and further assistance were also requested by the Gauteng First Response Group. Additional fire trucks arrived at the scene within minutes, after which the fire was finally brought under control and eventually extinguished.

“This incident once again demonstrates the importance of cooperation between community members, emergency service personnel, security companies, and organizations like AfriForum. When everyone responds quickly and works together, valuable time can be gained and greater damage potentially prevented,” says Elzabe Pretorius, chairperson of AfriForum’s Germiston branch.

The Germiston branch thanks all the role-players who provided support and assistance during the incident, namely the Ekurhuleni Fire Department, Fidelity Fire, AAA Security, Graphite, Nkosin Security, and the AfriForum branch members who were willing to help.

AfriForum’s Germiston branch will continue to work with communities, emergency services, and other stakeholders wherever possible to promote safety and preparedness in the area.
