Elandré follows in Steve Hofmeyr’s footsteps as Bruce Beyers in a new musical
One of the most iconic characters from the golden age of Afrikaans television is returning in 2027—this time on stage. Elandré will play the role of Bruce Beyers in Agter elke man – die musiekblyspel, a brand-new stage production debuting at the AfriForum Teater next year. Ticket sales for this production open on 1 October.
In doing so, the enthusiastic singer follows in the footsteps of Steve Hofmeyr, who portrayed the beloved character in the original television series and film. However, Elandré brings his own unique approach to this iconic role.
“I know Bruce Beyers is a character who holds immense nostalgia for many people. Having the opportunity to bring him to life on stage for a new generation is an enormous privilege. I look forward to bringing my own heart and energy to the role,” says Elandré.
The mystery surrounding the actress who will portray Aunty Stienie on stage has finally been solved: Amanda Strydom, one of South Africa’s most celebrated and versatile artists, has been chosen to bring this iconic character to life. Over a career spanning more than four decades, she has distinguished herself as an award-winning singer, songwriter, cabaret artist, playwright, and actress. Her song “Ek loop die pad” has become an Afrikaans classic, and her one-woman show *State of the Heart* won both DALRO and Evening Post awards. Kunste Onbeperk and the kykNET Fiëstas have also honoured her for her lifelong contribution to the arts.
In the meantime, audiences can look forward to a new stage adaptation of a story that has secured a special place in Afrikaans pop culture over the years. The beloved story is combined with original music penned by Johan Vorster and Jacomien de Wet of Inhoud Huis Musiek.
“Jacomien and I were able to isolate ourselves in a secluded wooden cottage near Greyton to write the music and lyrics for Agter elke man – the musical,” says Vorster. “We soon realised that a huge responsibility rested on our shoulders to do justice to the beloved characters so masterfully created by Frans Marx, even though the production would take on a brand-new form.”
Under the direction of director and writer Jannes Erasmus, new life will be breathed into the story of Agter elke man. Furthermore, internationally acclaimed set designer Wilhelm Disbergen will transport audiences back to the 80s with his masterful stage design.
“We are honoured to have the opportunity, for a second time, to adapt a well-known South African film or television production into a musical. The characters, the humour, and the world of Agter elke man offer so many possibilities for creating something special for the stage,” says De Wet.
The production follows the successful collaboration between AfriForum Teater and Inhoud Huis Musiek on various musical theatre productions. They have already captivated audiences with productions such as Die Gelofte, Die Kaplyn, Die Afrikaner maak so, Ons vir jou, and Semi-Soet – die musiekblyspel.
