AfriForum protests outside Tshwane House over delays of Lynnwood Road construction
Early this morning, AfriForum and AfriForum Youth transformed the entrance to Tshwane House – the municipal headquarters of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality – into a mock construction site, complete with safety tape, scaffolding, noisy machinery and a crew of road workers. This act of activism was undertaken to pressure the Metro into providing answers regarding questions the youth organisation raised as early as September. These enquiries concerned the status, safety, delays and expenditure related to the upgrade of Lynnwood Road, between University Road and Atterbury Road. The Metro has yet to respond to this request.

The so-called Line 2B Lynnwood Road project was initially scheduled for completion by October 2025, but the deadline has since been postponed to March 2027. This delay comes despite claims that the project is already 90% complete.
Hanno Koster, AfriForum Youth Spokesperson, once again handed over a letter containing the organisation’s demands to the Metro today. “Motorists and pedestrians using this section of Lynnwood Road have to struggle through this construction site daily. And although the project should have been completed two years ago, it appears there are still several months to go before this important and busy route is fully reopened to traffic. The Metro owes residents, pedestrians and motorists answers as to why this project is dragging on,” Koster explains.
According to Maree van den Berg, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Pretoria, the Metro has exhausted residents’ patience with these delays. “We have long been fed up with the noise, traffic congestion and dangers associated with these road works. Today’s protest action effectively brought residents’ frustrations right to the Metro’s doorstep to give officials a taste of the day-to-day experience of motorists and pedestrians on Lynnwood Road,” says Van den Berg.
