AfriForum prepares urgent contempt application after Tshwane Metro cuts schools’ power supply again
AfriForum has just become aware that the electricity of schools in Centurion are being cut off once again, in defiance of the court order obtained by the organisation and some of the affected schools against such action earlier this year. An urgent contempt application is now being prepared by AfriForum against the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
At the time, the Metro cut off schools’ power supply due to non-payment of their property rates, even though the schools are not responsible for paying these rates at all as it is the responsibility of the Gauteng Provincial Education Department. The schools were also able to prove that their utility bills were up to date at the time their power was cut.
The court order specified that all schools’ power supply should be restored immediately, that no further actions of this nature could take place and that schools should be compensated for any losses suffered as a result of the Metro’s actions. However, schools’ power was cut off again shortly afterwards and only restored after the Metro was put under pressure. That the situation is now arising for the third time, and this so close to the year’s final exams, is untenable.
AfriForum calls on any school affected by this to contact the organisation urgently at onderwys@afriforum.co.za.
