AfriForum increases patrols following surge in theft of security gate motors in Alberton

AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch has increased its visible presence in the community in recent times after an increase in gate motor thefts was observed in the Randhart and Newmarket neighbourhoods. The neighbourhood watch’s patrol officers have also responded to several other security incidents in the Alberton area.

According to information provided to the neighbourhood watch, a white Kia Picanto, with four men who are suspected to be involved, was spotted in connection with some of the gate motor thefts. AfriForum’s increased presence in the area resulted in more frequent patrols being conducted. Since then, according to the neighbourhood watch’s knowledge, no further similar incidents have been reported in the affected area.

Christopher Trevarthen, neighbourhood watch leader of AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch, emphasises that gate motors are not only expensive but also a crucial part of a home’s security. “When they are stolen, residents’ property and safety are put at risk. We have therefore stepped up our patrols in Randhart and Newmarket. Since then, the neighbourhood watch has recorded no further similar incidents in these neighbourhoods, but residents must remain vigilant,” he explains.

The neighbourhood watch also recently responded after a Toyota Fortuner was stolen at the Alberton LewenSentrum church. AfriForum’s patrol officers immediately began searching for the vehicle. The vehicle was later tracked down and recovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, by a local security company.

In a separate incident at the Engen service station in Brackenhurst, AfriForum’s patrol officers intervened when a group of young people who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol arrived at the service station and became involved in a confrontation with petrol attendants. The patrol officers intervened to defuse the situation and prevent further conflict. FOX Security and CPS Security subsequently dealt with the incident, as the service station falls under their security service.

AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch urges residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious people or vehicles and not to confront suspects themselves. Through cooperation between residents, private security companies, community safety structures and the police, a safer community can be created.
