Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum’s Upington branch refurbishes power boxes as part of 2026 school project

AfriForum’s Upington branch sanded down and repainted several power boxes in Upington on 16 and 17 September 2026 as part of AfriForum’s nationwide 2026 school project.

Three power boxes in the vicinity of Hoërskool Duineveld in Jan de Klerk Street, Oosterville, were refurbished after becoming severely faded by the sun over the years and being marred by graffiti. The power boxes were thoroughly sanded and then painted with green gloss paint to give the school surroundings a neater appearance.

Another two power boxes in 1st Avenue, next to the Oranjehof old-age home, were also sanded and repainted as part of the project.

The branch expressed its sincere gratitude to Lumber City for donating the paint, brushes and rollers that made the project possible. Special thanks also go to Ruan Strauss, one of the local teenage boys, who eagerly and enthusiastically stepped in to help refurbish the power boxes.

“This project is an excellent example of how community members and local businesses can work together to improve and beautify their surroundings. We are grateful to every stakeholder who contributed to making this project a success,” says Werner Strauss, district coordinator for AfriForum in the Northern Cape.

AfriForum encourages communities across the country to become actively involved in projects that contribute to the improvement and maintenance of public spaces. Through cooperation between residents, local institutions and businesses, a tangible difference can be made in preserving safe, clean and well-maintained neighbourhoods.
