Vryburg branch improves safety through community projects
The AfriForum branch in Vryburg continued several grass-cutting and clean-up projects in and around the town during July in an effort to improve the area while simultaneously reducing safety risks.
Among the projects undertaken was the clearing of the grass at the entrance to Vryburg from the Tosca road. This area was prioritised to improve visibility for motorists and reduce the risk of veld fires spreading from the surrounding areas into the town. The branch also cleared areas in Edwin Frylinck Street and cut the grass on two vacant plots. In total, the branch cut more than 1,5 hectares of grass during July.
“Long, overgrown grass poses a serious risk to communities as it obstructs visibility, increases the risk of veld fires and can be used by criminals as hiding places or escape routes. AfriForum therefore views the maintenance of public spaces not merely as an environmental improvement initiative, but as an important component of crime prevention and community safety,” says JP Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland.
According to Nel, the involvement of the local business community and residents is essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of projects such as these.
“The effectiveness of AfriForum’s neighbourhood team in promoting safety in Vryburg depends largely on community involvement. The more people who contribute their time, expertise and resources, the greater the neighbourhood team’s capacity to undertake visible safety initiatives and respond swiftly to local challenges,” says Nel.
