Safety and cleanliness high on AfriForum’s priority list in Chrissiesmeer

AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer branch removed an intoxicated person from the premises of a local guesthouse on 6 June after he acted aggressively towards the owner of the guesthouse. This followed an emergency call received by the organisation during a function at the guesthouse. An alleged misunderstanding between the individual and the guesthouse owner led to an altercation during which the perpetrator eventually became violent. Members of AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch responded promptly and, in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), escorted the intoxicated individual from the premises.

Two days later, on 8 June, the AfriForum neighbourhood watch responded to an emergency call regarding a cable theft incident at the corner of Meyer and Campbell Streets. The suspect, who had cut down an old telephone pole to gain access to the cables, unfortunately managed to flee with the stolen cable. The poll also damaged fences around residents’ properties when it fell.

In addition, AfriForum’s neighbourhood team in Chrissiesmeer completed its final grass-cutting projects for the season in May. More than 10 hectares of grass were cut at various locations to improve cleanliness and safety.

Meanwhile, the sustainable litter-bin project continues to deliver significant results. According to guesthouse owners, they regularly receive compliments from visitors about the town’s cleanliness. The bins are cleaned on a weekly basis. During May, 87 bags of litter were removed, bringing the total number of bags collected in 2026 so far to 453.

“Cleanliness and neatness in Chrissiesmeer are of vital importance because the town’s economy depends on tourism. Nobody wants to spend their holiday in a dirty town,” says Millicent van den Heever, leader of AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch.
