Redeployment of Free State mayors’ a smokescreen to evade accountability – AfriForum

The redeployment of seven mayors of municipalities in the Free State is, according to AfriForum, an attempt by the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee to evade accountability for incompetent or corrupt officials. The fact that the promised redeployment has not yet taken place and some of the mayors have refused to resign is proof that residents’ right to service delivery are not being prioritised.

The mayors of the Masilonyana, Moqhaka, Mafube, Letsemeng, Nketoana, Nala and Lejweleputswa Local Municipalities were earmarked for redeployment in August last year. These individuals are reportedly still in their positions while political processes within the ANC continue.

“While these processes are being dragged out, Free State municipalities are collapsing. Residents are left with crumbling road infrastructure, dilapidated power and water infrastructure and unreliable service delivery. Instead of holding incompetent or corrupt officials accountable, they are simply being moved to other positions or municipalities. This practice undermines accountability and worsens the already critical condition of many Free State municipalities,” says Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s Head for the central region.

“When mayors or municipal managers fail to fulfil their duties, there must be consequences. Simply moving officials to other municipalities means moving the problem onto another community.”

AfriForum has meanwhile sent a letter to the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee in the Free State in which the organisation expresses its concern about the party’s inability to enforce accountability and ensure sustainable service delivery.

The civil rights organisation has also launched a petition demanding that mayors and municipal managers who have been declared incompetent or accused of corruption be immediately suspended, rather than simply redeployed.

“The residents of the Free State cannot continue to pay the price for political incompetence. Communities deserve competent governance and reliable service delivery,” concludes Grobbelaar.
