PETITION IN SUPPORT OF AFRIFORUM’S URGENT COURT APPLICATION AGAINST THE EMFULENI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

PETITION BY RESIDENTS, PROPERTY OWNERS, BUSINESSES AND OTHER PERSONS AFFECTED BY THE CONTINUOUS SEWAGE POLLUTION OF THE VAAL RIVER

Purpose of this petition

I, the undersigned, respectfully request the High Court to take judicial notice of the widespread and ongoing impact that the continued discharge of untreated sewage into the Vaal River and surrounding environment is having on residents, businesses, visitors and the public.

This petition is submitted in support of AfriForum’s urgent application to compel the Emfuleni Local Municipality to immediately stop the ongoing sewage pollution and to comply with its constitutional and statutory obligations.

The continued pollution of the Vaal River affects our constitutional rights, including our rights to dignity, health, a safe environment and access to basic municipal services.
