Peaceful mass patrol in Mooi River following strong turnout of safety role players
The AfriForum neighbourhood watches in Mooi River, which include members from Bothaville, Sasolburg, Viljoenskroon, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Stilfontein, conducted a mass patrol in the area last week without incident. This was thanks to the strong turnout of safety role players, who ensured that law and order were maintained.
The AfriForum neighbourhood watches carried out the patrols in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the local community policing forum (CPF), volunteers and various security services. In total, 158 patrol members took part in the patrol and together covered 2 263 km in 71 vehicles. Eight individuals from, among others, SAPS and the CPF also participated in the patrols.
In Songloed, Klerksdorp, the neighbourhood watch and SAPS set up a roadblock, issued several fines to motorists and searched vehicles for drugs. In Potchefstroom, the neighbourhood watch provided assistance at a motor vehicle accident after receiving emergency training.
“The value of this mass patrol lies not only in the visibility of the participants or even the kilometres covered, but in the willingness and ability of all the role players to act as an integrated safety network quickly and effectively in real emergency situations,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s Dstrict Coordinator for the Mooi River.
