AfriForum Delportshoop branch repairs local road after flood damage
AfriForum’s Delportshoop branch recently carried out much-needed repairs to dirt roads in Sering and Brits Street after heavy rain caused extensive damage in the area and blocked residents’ access to the rest of the town.
The condition of the roads deteriorated rapidly after large amounts of water flowed through them. Residents struggled to safely access their homes, while vehicles ran the risk of sustaining damage due to the damage that was caused.
As part of the repairs, AfriForum used approximately 13 tons of stone and six tons of gravel to repair the damaged sections of the roads and make them passable again. A six-meter-long water pipe was also installed in Brits Street to improve drainage and help limit future water damage.
“The condition of the roads had deteriorated to such an extent that residents’ safety had been compromised. We decided not to just wait for solutions, but to make a difference ourselves,” says Ben Venter, Vice Chairman of AfriForum’s Delportshoop branch.

“This project shows what is possible when communities stand together and take responsibility for their environment. We believe that practical community involvement can make a big difference,” says Lize-Mari Smit, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Karoo.
AfriForum thanks all those involved, including volunteers and residents who helped make the project possible and contributed to successfully completing the repairs.
