One small town, one huge difference: AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer rubbish bin project expands

AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer rubbish bin project kicked off just over a year ago, yet this sustainable initiative is already making a huge difference in this popular tourist town. Since the start of the year, more than 530 bags of rubbish have been removed as part of the project – 99 of which were collected in June alone.

Among other things, the project fills a gap left by the Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s poor service delivery. Because municipal household refuse removal is so unreliable, many residents are also compelled to dispose of their household waste in the AfriForum rubbish bins.

According to Millicent van den Heever, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer branch, feedback from local businesses has been positive. “Businesses report that the town is significantly cleaner and that their guests and visitors specifically mention this to them. This feedback serves as proof that the project is making a difference and is slowly but surely helping to attract more customers to these businesses,” Van den Heever explains.

Some time ago, the Chrissiesmeer branch also took over the general maintenance of the local cemetery; by regularly mowing the grass, they ensure that the site remains a dignified resting place for loved ones. When the branch recently received a special request from a family in Mbombela (Nelspruit) regarding the refurbishment of a loved one’s grave, the team did not hesitate to step in and handle the repairs and restoration.

“We receive weekly requests for additional assistance with projects, and although we have limited funds, we always try to find a way to make it happen,” concludes Van den Heever.

The Chrissiesmeer branch invites local businesses and residents to collaborate with the branch and ensure the revitalisation of this tourist town. Contact Van den Heever (079 300 9402) or visit www.wordlid.co.za today.
