Koornfontein Primary School shows off newly painted bathrooms thanks to neighbourhood team
AfriForum’s MidWit neighbourhood team renovated two of the girls’ bathrooms at Koornfontein Primary School as part of the civil rights organisation’s renovation projects. This school, with its approximately 350 learners, was established in Komati in 1962.
Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Highveld, says the MidWit neighbourhood team stepped up to do repairs to the school’s infrastructure. The cracks on the walls of the two bathrooms were filled, after which the walls were repainted. The neighbourhood team also washed and painted the ceilings as well as the door and window frames. AfriForum also replaced the curtains in both bathrooms.
“AfriForum always promotes the well-being of learners and one of the ways this neighbourhood team has done this is by renovating this school’s bathrooms,” says Bekker.

To help create a clean and orderly living environment, the MidWit neighbourhood team in Emalahleni (Witbank) cut and cleaned more than two hectares of grass. Various areas were cleaned, including the park in Judy Street as well as the footbridge in Longtom Street, where grass stood higher than 1,5 m on both sides of the footpath. A total of 32 bags of rubbish were also removed.
“The Emalahleni Local Municipality’s public spaces are not maintained in any way. The MidWit neighbourhood team does not shy away from a challenge, which is why the team works hard to continuously cut and clean up the long grass,” says Sarel van Heerden, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Witbank branch.
In Middelburg, the neighbourhood team cut and cleaned more than five hectares of grass, including a variety of parks in, among others, Pongola Avenue. A total of 37 bags of rubbish were also picked up and removed.
“We have a big problem with litterers and drug addicts misusing the park in Middelburg. We are trying to take these parks back for the community and transform them into public spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone,” says Mark Salzwedel, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Middelburg branch.
