Johannesburg water crisis: It’s time to break the municipal monopoly on service delivery – AfriForum

AfriForum believes that the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality’s consideration of involving the private sector in water supply is an acknowledgement that the existing model for municipal service delivery is failing residents.

According to the organisation, residents should not be held hostage by failing municipal monopolies when other, viable alternatives exist.

Furthermore, AfriForum believes that communities are forced to rely on dysfunctional municipal systems and have limited freedom to consider other alternatives.

According to Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s manager for Environmental Affairs, competent private and community-driven institutions should be allowed to help deliver essential services, thereby creating space for innovation, competition, and greater community control.

“The real question is no longer whether alternative service delivery models are needed, but rather how quickly effective solutions can be implemented,” concludes De Klerk.
