Eskom’s monopoly in South Africa

South Africa’s national electricity supplier, Eskom, is known for corruption, misappropriation of funds, tender anomalies, dilapidated infrastructure and poor management. The electricity giant is quietly busy increasing its monopoly in South Africa by taking over municipal electricity networks.

Eskom is busy enforcing so-called distribution agency agreements (DAAs) on municipalities countrywide and thereby taking over the system and increasing its monopoly even further.

Even though AfriForum agrees that electricity distribution must not be entrusted to hopeless municipalities, there are however numerous other private and competent companies that can take over the service instead of a corrupt Eskom.

AfriForum is already busy having the validity of the DAA with the Merafong City Local Municipality revised and possibly disregarded.
