Christiana branch removes more than two tonnes of refuse following Municipality’s failure

AfriForum’s Christiana branch took matters into its own hands last week by removing refuse from the town after the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality failed to fulfil its municipal duties and provide refuse collection services to residents for more than two weeks.

Residents were forced to make alternative arrangements, prompting the branch to remove more than two tonnes of refuse, comprising over 300 bags, in an effort to alleviate the situation and keep the town cleaner.

“Communities cannot wait indefinitely while refuse piles up and residents are left without a basic municipal service. AfriForum’s Christiana branch decided to step in and take practical action to address the situation. We are doing this for the sake of our community and the town we call home,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland.

AfriForum has learnt that the Municipality is expected to resume refuse collection services this week. However, the branch will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the service continues uninterrupted. AfriForum’s Christiana branch also stands ready to intervene again should the Municipality fail to maintain the service properly.

“We expect the Municipality to fulfil its responsibilities towards residents. Refuse collection is an essential service, and residents should not have to find emergency solutions themselves,” concludes Nel.
