AfriForum’s Bloemhof neighbourhood watch helps apprehend suspected murderer
AfriForum’s Bloemhof neighbourhood watch responded on Friday, together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and other security companies, to the alleged assault of an elderly woman and succeeded in helping to apprehend her suspected attacker.
Following the initial response, AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch members continued their patrols and, together with the other role players, began searching for the suspect. The suspect was later spotted in the area, after which one of AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch members responded swiftly and tracked him down. The neighbourhood watch member immediately called the SAPS, who subsequently arrested the suspect. According to available information, the incident occurred at approximately 15:00. Thanks to the swift and effective cooperation between the various role players, the suspect was arrested at approximately 17:00.
“This incident once again demonstrates the importance of good cooperation between the community, neighbourhood watches, the police and other security role players. The swift response and continued patrols by our members contributed to the suspect being located and handed over to the SAPS,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland.
AfriForum has meanwhile expressed its condolences to the loved ones of the elderly woman, who later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
“It is heartbreaking that a life was taken in such a violent manner. No elderly person should have to live in fear or be robbed in this way of their dignity, safety and, ultimately, their life. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this senseless loss,” says Nel.
The civil rights organisation is calling on residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity immediately to the SAPS or the relevant security role players. AfriForum’s security structures conduct regular patrols and collaborate with the local police and private security companies to help nip crime in the bud.
