Alberton branch fights crime with new safety initiative
AfriForum’s Alberton branch, in collaboration with Hi-Zone Security Services, installed license plate recognition cameras (LPR cameras) at high-risk areas to promote proactive, technology-driven crime prevention. This project was started in 2025 and was recently completed.
According to Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the East Rand, Alberton is experiencing a high volume of violent crime and organised vehicle-related crimes. Recent incidents of shootings, robberies and high-speed chases indicate that crime networks are making use of various transit routes, namely Swartkoppies, Heidelberg Road, Kliprivier, the R59 and the N12 main routes, to commit crime or return to their respective areas.
Olckers believes that LPR cameras are an important tool in stopping this crime wave. “It only takes a fraction of a second for these cameras to read license plates and then identify stolen or suspicious vehicles, thereby providing important evidence to local police and security companies.”
The LPR cameras play an important role in combating crime as they act as a deterrent to criminals; enable the rapid detection and arrest of criminals and effectively monitor crime hotspots.
“The LPR cameras enable security structures to see which vehicles are moving in and out of Alberton and to monitor these vehicles. It also makes it more efficient to act quickly if these vehicles have been involved in criminal activity or are wanted in connection with other crimes,” says Christopher Trevarthen, AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch leader in Alberton.
AfriForum calls on the residents of Alberton, local neighbourhood watches, security companies and local authorities to work with the organisation to install a network of LPR cameras at main entrances, residential areas and business areas in Alberton.
“It is important for us to stay up to date with technology such as the LPR cameras so that we can help prevent crime and keep the community safe,” says Clifford Smith, AfriForum’s branch chairperson in Alberton.
Gideon Geyser, director of Hi-Zone Security Services, adds that it is important for this Alberton-based company to work with local role players to secure the community.
