Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum is an Afrikaans civil rights organisation that protects the rights of minority groups at national as well as provincial level, and anyone who can identify with AfriForum’s principles and objectives may join the organisation. AfriForum launches Green Month project for succulent conservation

AfriForum is celebrating Green Month this month, with this year’s focus on conserving the country’s rich diversity of succulent plants. Although more than 40% of the world’s approximately 10 000 succulent species are found in South Africa, the poaching of these plants places immense pressure on the survival of various species. For this very reason, AfriForum’s Education Projects and Environmental Affairs divisions are launching a succulent conservation project tomorrow, encouraging the public to effectively “plant succulents out of their predicament” during September. The project will also be promoted to schools.

The launch of this project takes place tomorrow (16 September) at the Safari Garden Centre in Pretoria. During the event, botanist Heinrich van Niekerk, a specialist in succulents and clivias, will highlight the importance of succulent conservation. Guests will also be treated to a screening of Vet vannie land, an award-winning documentary about the succulents of the harsh Richtersveld and the struggle to conserve the region’s plants, which are on the brink of extinction due to poaching.
