Waterwheel Monument transformed after AfriForum steps in
The AfriForum branch in Keimoes undertook the enormous task on 7 May of restoring the well-known Waterwheel Monument to its former glory. The waterwheel had fallen into severe disrepair after the !Kai-Garib Local Municipality failed to carry out any maintenance there over the past 30 months. The restoration work continued until 13 May.
In several places, the paving had collapsed and the water pipe leading to the dam had previously been joined together by the Municipality at eight different places — some repairs had even been carried out using inner tubes and wire. The trough into which the wheel pours its water had rusted through. The dam had serious cracks through which water leaked, causing bricks to collapse. As a result, people could not move properly around the dam. The pipe running from the waterwheel to the dam was also blocked, which caused the dam to stand empty and crack even further.
Kobus Pool, a member of AfriForum’s Keimoes branch, and Isaac Manda, a day labourer, carried out the restoration work. The dam was repaired, all cracks were fixed and the water trough was restored and repainted with two coats of sealant. The pipe was replaced up to the inside of the dam and the canal embankment was repaired and built up.
New bricks were obtained and the paving was neatly restored. The wheel now once again pours water into the trough without any leaks. Water flows properly through to the small dam without overflowing or leaking and everything once again appears neat and well maintained. Lucky Beukes, a helper, assisted with cutting the grass and pruning the trees. In total, four tractor-trailer loads of grass, branches and rubbish were removed.
The Waterwheel Monument is now once again fully functional and presents a neat appearance for tourists and the community.
