Not a single Northern Cape landfill site meets standards, AfriForum audit shows

Not a single one of the six landfill sites audited in the Northern Cape this year as part of AfriForum’s annual landfill audit meets the minimum requirements for responsible waste management. This poor performance has earned the Northern Cape the unenviable title of the worst-performing province in the country regarding landfill sites. The province’s track record in AfriForum’s landfill audit confirms a serious state of decay, with only three sites having passed the audit over the past five years. During this period, 87 audits were conducted across 26 different landfill sites.

AfriForum’s recently released landfill audit report further indicates that sites in the Northern Cape achieved an average compliance score of only 14% this year – slightly lower than the Free State, which recorded a compliance score of 19%. Landfill sites in the Western Cape and Gauteng performed the best this year; the Western Cape achieved an average compliance score of 66%, while Gauteng recorded 64%.

This year, AfriForum audited 132 landfill sites and transfer stations across all nine provinces. However, only 30 sites (representing 23% of the total) met at least 80% of the audit requirements. This suggests that, on average, nearly eight out of every ten sites nationwide exhibit serious shortcomings in infrastructure, operational management or compliance with basic requirements.

According to AfriForum’s landfill audit report, not a single one of the sites audited in the Northern Cape this year managed to achieve a compliance score of more than 22%.

The province’s results are as follows (the compliance score is indicated in parentheses):

  • Delportshoop landfill, Dikgatlong Local Municipality (22)
  • Kakamas landfill, Kai !Garib Local Municipality (2)
  • Keimoes landfill, Kai !Garib Local Municipality (8)
  • Prieska landfill, Siyathemba Local Municipality (18)
  • Springbok landfill, Nama Khoi Local Municipality (0)
  • Upington landfill, Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality (32)

Werner Strauss, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for this province, believes the Northern Cape’s dismal performance points to serious, systemic decay within local government. “This decay is evident on various levels, and AfriForum’s landfill audit confirms that waste management is suffering under the same strain as other services in the province,” he explains.

He further maintains that the Northern Cape’s scarce natural resources are being threatened by the poor management of landfills, which is also leading to the pollution of groundwater. Furthermore, the spread of refuse due to poor site management, has direct consequences for economic activities in this arid province, including agriculture, livestock farming and ecotourism.

“Effective waste management is non-negotiable and a matter that has a far-reaching impact on people and the environment. There is no longer time for excuses – the municipalities’ poor performance in this audit clearly indicates that we are heading toward a disaster,” concludes Strauss.
