Licence cards that’s valid for eight years still in the pipeline, minister promises AfriForum

Work is being done in the background to extend the validity period of driver’s licence cards to eight years. This is what the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, wrote in a letter to AfriForum dated 14 March 2026. The civil rights organisation is now calling on the Minister to complete the work promptly and remind her that the eyes of the entire country are on her Department.

Creecy’s letter comes in response to a letter that AfriForum sent her a month earlier to point out that the Department of Transport’s performance plan indicates that the amended regulation on the validity period of driver’s licence cards should be published in early 2026. The Minister writes in her response that an opportunity for public comment will soon be offered on a preliminary version of the amended regulation.

Louis Boshoff (English)

According to Louis Boshoff, AfriForum Spokesperson, the Department should not make excuses to delay changing the necessary regulations. “There is overwhelming public support for this decision and much reason to implement it quickly,” says Boshoff.

“Every day that the Department takes to complete the process, there are more people whose licence cards expire, but are still fully competent to drive their vehicles safely and responsibly. AfriForum will continue to put pressure on the Department to complete this process.”
