Duck pond flourishes thanks to five years of maintenance by Springs branch

AfriForum’s Springs branch has been involved in the maintenance and improvement of the duck pond in George Sutter Park since January 2022, and the branch plans to continue developing this public space into a safe haven for the community for years to come.

The park before AfriForum began maintaining it.

The branch’s dedicated gardening team stepped in once again to carry out the monthly maintenance of the site. This includes general clean-up work, grass cutting, tree pruning and maintaining overall cleanliness. The branch also oversees the repair and maintenance of the borehole and pump at the dam. This infrastructure simultaneously serves as an emergency water point for the community.

When infrastructure breaks down or is damaged, AfriForum’s Springs branch also steps in. The fence around duck pond was repaired by the branch after a vehicle drove through it. Where necessary, AfriForum also cuts the grass outside the fence to improve the general appearance of the area.

“We believe in visible and sustainable community involvement. By maintaining the site regularly, keeping the borehole and emergency water point operational, and addressing damage, we help protect a public space that belongs to the entire community. It is not only about having a clean park, but about taking responsibility and making a positive difference in Springs ourselves,” says Petro Kirton, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Springs branch.

AfriForum’s Springs branch will continue to maintain duck pond and the surrounding area and, where possible, provide practical support to the community.
