Discussions needed to tackle potholes in Vryheid – AfriForum
AfriForum’s Vryheid branch has once again urged the Abaqulusi Local Municipality to work with the civil rights organisation to address the pothole problem in Vryheid. This follows the continued deterioration of the town’s road infrastructure and the Municipality’s ongoing failure to maintain it properly.
“Our streets are in such a poor condition that community members at a recent public meeting agreed to make a donation so that the local AfriForum branch could repair the potholes itself,” says Linda de Jager, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Vryheid branch.
As far back as March this year, the AfriForum branch informed the Local Municipality of the estimated cost of repairing every pothole, but every appeal has fallen on deaf ears. The civil rights organisation has therefore once again called on the Municipality to join forces so that the road infrastructure can be restored to a safe and roadworthy condition.
“AfriForum has already worked successfully with municipalities in several towns to repair potholes. It is therefore entirely possible to roll out a similar project in Vryheid,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
