Bethal stock theft: AfriForum assists with arrest of four suspects
AfriForum played an important role in the arrest of four suspects for their alleged involvement in livestock theft incidents in the Bethal area on Friday 13 February. Eleven stolen sheep were also recovered. This breakthrough follows the good cooperation between AfriForum, the Bethal Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) local livestock theft unit.
The SAPS approached AfriForum on Friday at 12:00 for assistance in locating a suspect linked to livestock theft. The suspect was eventually located along the R38 (the main route between Bethal and Standerton) where his vehicle had broken down. He was handed over to the SAPS and arrested.
A few hours later – at 19:00 – the SAPS again reached out to AfriForum for support with a follow-up operation via night vision technology after further information regarding stock theft was obtained. According to the new information, other suspects, who are part of the stock theft gang, wanted to sell sheep that had been stolen earlier in the week. The help of the Bethal CPF proto team was also called in.
The suspects were spotted at 21:00 with the help of AfriForum’s night vision technology where they were busy loading the sheep from a bakkie and hiding it in a corrugated iron hut. Proto team patrollers and detectives from the stock theft unit coordinated to surround the area without any lighting and to jointly move in on the suspects.
The two suspects were caught red-handed and arrested without any difficulty. The vehicle they used was also seized. A fourth suspect was also arrested because the cattle were hidden in his property.
“Good information and cooperation led to this success. We are grateful to every member who sacrificed their time to make the operation a huge success,” says Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s District Coordinator in the Highveld.
