AfriForum’s PE neighbourhood watches feed hundreds amid Cape storms
AfriForum’s three neighbourhood watches in Port Elizabeth have teamed up this past week to support communities affected by the devastating storms in, among others, the Eastern Cape, with donations of food, clothing, blankets, formula milk and diapers.
The Broadwood and Springfield Tudor neighbourhood watches prepared and distributed approximately 200 hot meals with a generous donation from Superspar Mount Pleasant. The Nice to see you restaurant in Mount Pleasant also donated 67 pre-packaged meals to AfriForum’s Springfield Tudor neighbourhood watch, which in turn delivered the food parcels to the MTR Smit Children’s Haven. AfriForum’s Broadwood neighbourhood watch also delivered vegetables and fruit in Greenbushes, as well as to the Louisa Myburgh Home For The Aged and Caring With Heart Centre.
The neighbourhood watches also did not hesitate to get involved in the clean-up work. The neighbourhood watches in Broadwood, Springfield Tudor and Walker Drive immediately visited low-lying streets to check for possible flooding. Where flooding occurred, they blocked off the streets with the permission of the police and notified emergency services.

In Broadwood, the neighbourhood watch assisted the municipal contractors, who were working through the night to repair power lines, with the necessary lighting. Residents of Justin Road also provided coffee and tea to the municipal team throughout the night.
“It fills one with hope to see that in the midst of severe storms, the neighbourhood watches not only focused on the safety of residents, but that they also rushed to the aid of municipal teams and other organisations. All three neighbourhood watches carried out various patrols, often at the expense of their own safety and comfort, to ensure that the community was safe,” says Peter Kindness, Leader of AfriForum’s Broadwood neighbourhood watch.
