Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum’s Ottosdal branch makes a visible difference in town

AfriForum’s branch in Ottosdal continued in May to make a meaningful difference in the community by undertaking sustainable cleaning and maintenance projects in the town.

As part of AfriForum’s Herstel en Versnel (restore-and-accelerate) project, the branch has already cut more than six hectares of grass in Ottosdal. The brach has also cleaned and cleared pavements, while maintaining several vacant plots.

The branch is currently spending more than R2 400 per week to ensure that the town’s grass is kept under control and that public spaces remain neat and tidy. According to the branch, cutting the grass of vacant plots not only contributes to a cleaner environment, but also improves safety in the community by limiting hiding places for criminal activity and reducing fire hazards.

Community members are also involved in the project, and equipment is being loaned to the branch so that more areas can be cleaned in less time.

“AfriForum’s Ottosdal branch believes that communities themselves must take responsibility for improving their town. Given the pace of municipal decline, this is the only solution to prevent the town from deteriorating completely. By undertaking these projects, we aim not only to create a neat town, but also to restore hope and pride within the community,” says Jp Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland.
