AfriForum’s Noord van die berg branch important role player in Wonderpark Marathon’s success
AfriForum’s Noord van die berg branch toiled and sweated for three weeks to get the roads ready for the Wonderpark Marathon, a Comrades qualifying marathon, which took place in Akasia on 24 January. The team began this giant task on 6 January to act in the interest of the athletes’ safety.
The neighbourhood team and branch management stepped in to fix the roads on the route, as well as surrounding roads. More than a ton of tar was used to repair 23 potholes in Rachel de Beer, Sylvia and Dieffenbachia Streets, as well as First Avenue. Furthermore, the grass in Dieffenbachia Street, First Avenue, Sylvia Street, Second Avenue, Willem Cruywagen Street, Joan Road and Waterbok Street was cut, as well as the open areas in Francois and Makkie Streets in Tileba, which were an eyesore and a danger to residents and motorists. Approximately 60 bakkie loads of grass were eventually driven away. The dangerous bushes hanging from the bridge over the R80 road were also cut down and four bakkie loads of garbage were removed.
The Noord van die berg branch continued their hard work on the day of the marathon when they started preparations as early as 03:00. The potholes that they couldn’t repair beforehand were covered with safety signs to alert the athletes thereof. The branch also made resources available during the race, including a medical vehicle, two AfriForum patrollers who patrolled the route and 28 branch members who acted as officials along the road. The branch also had a so-called spirit street where they motivated athletes to keep going.
“This project brought the community together and showed that AfriForum’s Noord van die berg branch really cares about everyone. It shows that people want to preserve, maintain and build on their environment,” says Ruan Janse van Vuuren, Chairperson for AfriForum’s North of the Mountain branch.
Janse van Vuuren thanks Maximum Security, Sacramento Spur, Tawny Creek Spur and the Akasia Athletic Club for their support on the day of the marathon.
