AfriForum’s Community Safety Centre helps combat crime in Bloemfontein

AfriForum’s Bloemfontein Community Safety Centre (CSC) dispatched response vehicles in the Bloemfontein area on average three times a day (95 times in total) during January to respond to emergencies and crime-related incidents. During this time, response teams responded to four fires, one theft and 11 car accidents, as well as making eight arrests and reporting four suspicious persons or vehicles.

The CSC continuously works with the AfriForum911 Response Unit, local AfriForum neighbourhood watches and other security role players to handle diverse operational incidents.

The statistics show that direct communication with the community continues to be a basic need for residents. The CSC received a total of 86 complaints via WhatsApp and handled 25 telephone complaints. The teams’ patrols also played an important role in visible crime prevention. AfriForum neighbourhood watches conducted eight patrols through residential areas during the month, the AfriForum911 Response Unit conducted 36 patrols, and 11 joint patrols.

“AfriForum’s operational statistics in Bloemfontein are proof that organised community safety in collaboration with various role players makes a tangible and measurable difference in combating crime,” says Christo Groenewald, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Bloemfontein.

“This close collaboration and subsequent successes strengthen integrated response times, improve the flow of information between role players and actively contribute to increased safety in neighbourhoods.”

AfriForum will continue to expand its safety network in Bloemfontein, train volunteers and deepen cooperation with role players to make communities safer.

AfriForum calls on residents to remain actively involved in their local neighbourhood watches and to report crime and suspicious activities in a timely manner, as cooperation between community and security structures remains the key to sustainable safety.
