AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer branch alleviates distress where the Msukaligwa Local Municipality fails
AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer branch – through its refuse bin project, grave maintenance initiative, and security group – is making a visible difference in the town, providing much-needed relief where the Msukaligwa Local Municipality increasingly fails to deliver reliable services.
This year alone, the branch has removed 619 bags of refuse to ease the burden of accumulating waste caused by the municipality’s deteriorating refuse removal services. In July, 89 bags of refuse were removed, and a cleanup operation was carried out at the corner of Bothwell and Percy Streets to spruce up the intersection.
Millicent van den Heever, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer branch, notes that the town is already cleaner and that the tidy environment creates a better impression among tourists.

“A project like this allows one to make a significant difference in a town. We regularly receive compliments from tourists who notice how much the town has improved,” she explains.
Meanwhile, the branch has also continued its grave maintenance project. This initiative focuses on maintaining graves in the town’s cemetery. Since the local municipality fails to adequately maintain the cemetery grounds, the branch assists by regularly cutting the grass and ensuring the general tidiness of the site.
The Chrissiesmeer branch also participated in AfriForum’s mass patrol in July, with four vehicles deployed in Chrissiesmeer as part of this larger security operation.
Van den Heever says the branch would like to continue these projects but emphasises that support from the local business community is needed.
