AfriForum trains new Voluntary Training Corps instructors in Natal

AfriForum’s division for Community Safety division trained neighbourhood watch members as Voluntary Training Corps instructors this past weekend. The course took place in Durban and aimed to equip members with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to offer level 1 training in basic safety modules in their communities. At the end of this course, instructors are equipped to train neighbourhood watch and community members in legal aspects, the handling of patrols and accident and crime scenes, and radio speech procedure.

The newly qualified instructors are active members of various AfriForum neighbourhood watches in Durban, Amanzimtoti and other local neighbourhood watches on the lower south coast. This initiative is part of AfriForum’s broader goal to empower local safety structures by expanding specialised training and community-driven capacity. This training then begins with level 1 lectures that are offered in communities to address resilience.

“We have trained several instructors per branch so that they can support each other during training in their communities,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

“This training program, which was launched in September 2022, has already produced numerous successful sessions across the country,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety. “This forms part of AfriForum’s ongoing efforts to help communities become more self-reliant and resilient. By prioritising self-defence training, we enable citizens to take proactive action to improve their own safety.”

The course, which is facilitated by AfriForum, qualifies members to act as volunteer instructors in local AfriForum neighbourhood watches.
