AfriForum tackles various community issues in the East Rand

AfriForum’s Germiston branch made quick work of addressing various community issues in the East Rand during April. Thanks to the input of various role players, residents and local authorities, a land subsidence in Denlee was addressed and illegal occupiers were removed from a site in Primrose.

Barely two weeks ago, a local resident of Oak Avenue in Primrose requested assistance regarding illegal occupiers in the area. The site was in a poor condition and littered with refuse. The presence of the occupiers increasingly hampered the safety of the area, prompting AfriForum’s Germiston branch to report the situation to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The following day, various role players, including the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD), the Department of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service (SAPS), visited the site. The area has since been cleared, and eviction orders have been obtained.

“This situation is proof that good relationships and cooperation with various role players, local authorities and the community can make a real difference,” says Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.

A few days after the illegal occupiers were handed over to authorities, the branch again intervened on behalf of the community when a Denlee resident noticed a subsidence in the ground. The Metro was contacted again, and a team was deployed to investigate the situation. The Metro determined that it was not a sinkhole as initially suspected, but that years of construction and rain had weakened the ground and that there was a room with walls hidden beneath the building level. Investigations are still underway to safely repair this subsidence to prevent further subsidence.

“AfriForum’s Germiston branch is committed to assisting the residents of the East Rand with any community issues; therefore, the branch will continue to monitor the situation and provide the necessary assistance to address the issues,” says Olckers.
