AfriForum repairs more than 150 potholes in Ottosdal within just two weeks
While the Tswaing Local Municipality in North West continues to neglect the maintenance of Ottosdal’s roads, AfriForum’s local branch has repaired more than 150 potholes in this town in just two weeks. Since the branch’s pothole repair project was launched in June of this year, more than 450 potholes have already been repaired. Some of these potholes were so large that motorists were forced to swerve off the road to avoid them.
AfriForum has already sent several letters to the Municipality regarding the poor condition of the town’s infrastructure but has so far received no feedback or seen any tangible action indicating that the Municipality is addressing the problem.
However, JP Nel, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Stellaland, maintains that AfriForum’s Ottosdal branch could no longer stand by and watch the town’s roads continue to deteriorate while the Municipality fails to carry out essential maintenance. Consequently, the branch has now stepped in to tackle the town’s pothole crisis itself.
“The potholes were so big that motorists even had to create makeshift detours alongside the existing roadway to avoid them. It is unacceptable that a Municipality responsible for maintaining its road infrastructure continues to neglect this duty. Where the municipality fails to do its job, AfriForum will continue to step in and ensure that the necessary maintenance is carried out. Our community deserves safe, serviceable and well-maintained roads,” Nel concludes.
