AfriForum plans ahead; Overstrand branch sets up emergency water point at primary school
The Overstrand branch took an important step on 26 February to strengthen local disaster preparedness by establishing an emergency water point at Laerskool Gansbaai. This initiative forms part of the branch’s continued focus on community safety and proactive planning to assist residents during crisis situations. The emergency water point has been strategically placed at the school as it is centrally located, easily accessible and a well-known gathering place in the community.
The emergency water point is specifically designed to serve the wider community in the event of water outages, natural disasters, fires or any other emergency where access to clean water may be limited, as which Gansbaai experienced during the festive season. By establishing infrastructure in advance, quicker and more effective action can be taken when a crisis arises.
The use of the school grounds as an emergency water point highlights the important role that educational institutions play in community resilience. In emergencies, the school grounds can function as a safe and organised distribution point where resources are coordinated and distributed.
Marique van Dalen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Boland, Fanie Coetzee, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Overstrand branch, and Riaan Booysen, AfriForum’s Safety Chairperson of the Overstrand neighbourhood watches, officially handed over the emergency water point to Maresa de Villiers, the School Principal.
According to the branch management, this project is an example of how collaboration between community organisations and local institutions can make a tangible difference. “We believe in not just reacting when a disaster occurs, but in planning ahead and creating infrastructure that can protect our community. This emergency water point is an investment in the safety and well-being of Gansbaai residents,” says Van Dalen.
The Overstrand branch thanks the Principal and governing body for their cooperation and willingness to make their facilities available. This partnership contributes to a stronger community that stands together in times of need.
The branch encourages residents to deal responsibly with the emergency water point.
