AfriForum places Mangaung Metro on terms over weeks-long water crisis

AfriForum’s Bloemfontein branch has put the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality on terms regarding the ongoing water crisis which has left the residents of Bloemfontein without adequate water supply for three weeks. With this, AfriForum submitted a complaint about the crisis to the South African Human Rights Commission (HRC).

Several neighbourhoods and informal settlements still experience inadequate water supply with little to no answers from the Municipality regarding a workable action plan. AfriForum now demands that the sporadic water supply be restored immediately and that the Municipality takes active steps to implement sustainable solutions. If the municipality does not comply, AfriForum will be forced to consider further legal action.

“The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality must take ownership of these problems and not just look for short-term solutions. The focus must be on regular maintenance and infrastructure upgrades that will significantly reduce problems in the long term,” says Christo Groenewald, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Bloemfontein.

The current situation has a serious impact on residents’ quality of life, as basic hygiene and access to drinking water are compromised. AfriForum insists that the Municipality fulfils its constitutional obligations towards residents by acting quickly to face this humanitarian crisis.

AfriForum will continue to put pressure on the Municipality and use all available legal means to ensure that the rights of Bloemfontein’s residents are protected.
