AfriForum commits to defend private property rights as Mbalula vows to expropriate land without compensation

Ernst van Zyl (English)

Following the ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula reiterating the party’s promise to expropriate land without compensation over the weekend, the civil rights organisation AfriForum has identified 2026 as a watershed year in the fight to protect the constitutional right to private property. While addressing a rally in Mogwase in Rustenburg as part of the ANC’s 114th anniversary celebrations, Mbalula further stated that the ANC also intends to push more extreme policies through such as nationalising the Reserve Bank.

AfriForum and others will appear in the Western Cape High Court Town in March 2026 to challenge the constitutionality of the Expropriation Act. This is setting up to be a monumental case that will determine the future of South Africa. AfriForum will continue its fact-based campaigns both domestically and abroad; produce new research projects to expose the government’s lies about land ownership; as well as demonstrate why the constitutional right to private property is crucial.

According to Ernst van Zyl, Head of Public Relations at AfriForum, the ANC has expressed its desire and mission to expropriate private property without compensation for years. It’s this legitimate threat that AfriForum has and will continue to document and expose both domestically and abroad.

“Mbalula emphasising the ANC’s plans to confiscate property and nationalise the Reserve Bank is just further evidence of their burning desire for total power and control, regardless of how many rights they violate and how many lives they destroy to obtain it,” Van Zyl says.
