AfriForum Alberton helps SAPS locate minibus taxi

AfriForum Alberton’s number plate recognition cameras and operational team helped locate a minibus taxi linked to an active police case in Alberton on 27 September. Members of the Brackendowns South African Police Service (SAPS) subsequently stopped the vehicle.

The cameras first recorded the vehicle in Alrode South on the evening of 25 September. It was linked to an active case at the Thokoza SAPS. AfriForum members dispatched a patrol, but repeatedly lost sight of the vehicle.

Early on 27 September, the cameras recorded the vehicle again. AfriForum Alberton’s intelligence and operational team leaders located it on Swartkoppies and requested assistance from members of the Brackendowns SAPS. Police stopped the vehicle in Potgieter Street.

The driver and vehicle were then taken to the Thokoza police station. According to information provided to AfriForum, the driver was released after it was established that he had only started his first shift as a driver that day. The minibus taxi was taken to a vehicle pound.

AfriForum Alberton thanks the Brackendowns SAPS for its swift response and the Thokoza SAPS for its further handling of the case.

“When technology, private security initiatives and the SAPS work together, we can respond to information more quickly and take effective action against crime. Cameras alone cannot stop a vehicle; it takes people on the ground and police officers who respond. This kind of cooperation gives us a better chance of winning the fight against crime,” says Christopher Trevarthen, AfriForum Alberton’s neighbourhood watch leader.
