AfriForum neighbourhood watches: 14 members now also qualified shooting instructors in the Northern Region
AfriForum’s Community Safety Division trained 14 neighbourhood watch members as accredited shooting instructors this past weekend. The training took place in Pretoria and aimed to equip members with the necessary firearm knowledge and skills to provide basic shooting training within their own communities.
The newly qualified shooting instructors are active members of various AfriForum neighbourhood watches in the Northern Region. This initiative is part of AfriForum’s broader goal to empower local safety structures through specialised training and community-driven capacity building.
Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, said the long-term objective is to train at least one shooting instructor per neighbourhood watch or local AfriForum branch, ensuring that each community has access to a qualified instructor.
“This training programme, launched in September 2022, has already produced numerous successful sessions across the country,” said Broodryk. “It forms part of AfriForum’s ongoing efforts to help communities become more self-reliant and resilient. By prioritising self-defence training, we are enabling citizens to take proactive steps in improving their own safety.”
The course, facilitated by AfriForum, qualifies members as accredited range officers and basic shooting instructors. These trained individuals offer their services voluntarily to fellow neighbourhood watch members and branch members, and assist in organising and managing shooting practices in collaboration with local leadership.
