10-year driving licences: Have your say on draft amendments, says AfriForum
AfriForum encourages members of the public to comment on the proposed amendments to the National Road Traffic Regulations 2000, which were gazetted on 17 August. The proposed amendments extend the validity period of some driving licence cards from five to ten years and specify how this decision will be implemented. There is now opportunity to comment on the transitional arrangements and on certain terms of the new validity period.
The publication of these draft regulations follows Cabinet’s decision on 29 July that the validity period of driving licences should be extended to ten years. This, in turn, followed years of public pressure by AfriForum and other organisations for this extension. On 30 July AfriForum also called on the Department of Transport to implement Cabinet’s decision as soon as possible.
According to Louis Boshoff, AfriForum Spokesperson, it is important that there should not be any errors in the amended regulations. “The public has been yearning for licences with extended validity periods for a long time, so government must now ensure that no technical defects in the regulations lead to any further delay of the implementation of this decision. This is why AfriForum urges members of the public to submit informed comments on the draft regulations,” explains Boshoff.
The draft regulations are available at the following link. Comments can be submitted to CommentsNRTR@dot.gov.za within 30 days. AfriForum is also preparing full comments which will be made public.
