The civil rights organisation AfriForum has strongly condemned the Constitutional Court\u2019s decision to legalise calls for the murder of Afrikaners and farmers \u2013 as in \u201cKill the Boer\u201d. The legalisation comes after the Constitutional Court earlier today dismissed AfriForum\u2019s application for leave to appeal against two previous rulings that legalised the singing of this chant. The order states that the decision was made because an appeal \u201cbears no reasonable prospects of success\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, emphasises that with the political transition of 1994, the impression was created that the Constitution and the Constitutional Court would protect human rights \u2013 protection that would also include the human rights of Afrikaners. \u201cAfter this shocking court ruling, we see that this is no longer the case. We are seeing an increasing radical implementation of the Constitution. We see an increase in ideologically driven judges. However, we are not going to become discouraged. We take clear notice of this \u2013 we also take notice of the fact that President Cyril Ramaphosa and the government do not want to condemn the statements of \u2018Kill the Boer\u2019,\u201d explains Kriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response, AfriForum will confidently continue to expand the organisation\u2019s 177 neighbourhood and farm watches. \u201cWe are doing this so that we can ensure that there is a safe future for us, our communities and our descendants. If the authorities do not want to protect us, we will continue to protect ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Kriel, \u201csomething unthinkable has happened\u201d with this ruling, and it is now legal to chant or use slogans that call for a part of the community to be murdered. \u201cWe do not accept the decision calmly, and we will not resign ourselves to it, because we have self-respect. We also refuse to accept that our children must hear that they can be murdered, and that society approves of it.
