The decline of Harrismith and ways in which the decay can be put to an end were the focus of AfriForum\u2019s recent meeting with Amos Goliath, Acting Municipal Manager of the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality. During this meeting that Christa Ikking, AfriForum\u2019s Coordinator for the Highland Region, requested with Goliath, several nagging issues that are crippling this once picturesque town were scrutinised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Ikking, the decay of roads in and around Harrismith, continued power failures and broken traffic lights are some of the most pressing problems that were presented to the Municipal Manager. The discussions were, however, positive and it was decided that the municipality and AfriForum would join forces in the rebuilding of this town, she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYears of decay and decline in Harrismith now necessitate cooperation between the municipality and the community,\u201d says Ikking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, it appears that the municipality\u2019s promises will not only remain promises. On Ikking\u2019s request, Goliath and Ikking visited the local landfill site directly after their meeting to discuss feasible solutions for this site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe condition of the site is desperate. Intervention is urgently needed and cooperation is the only way in which the deterioration can be addressed. I am sure that there will be many more meetings regarding the state of the town, but I am positive that we can achieve our common goal for the benefit of this community,\u201d concludes Ikking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
