In AfriForum\u2019s comments at these two hearings Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum\u2019s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape, pointed to several important concerns that AfriForum has regarding the bill, namely the lack of details on how the NHI could be implemented, what it would cost and who would manage it. In addition, AfriForum believes that the intended funding of the NHI will place an unsustainable burden on taxpayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government should firstly focus on economic growth and tackle the problems in the current health system rather than trying to launch a programme like the NHI. The money that is currently being spent on this could much rather be spent on the resolving existing problems at public hospitals,\u201d explains Erasmus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AfriForum warns that the NHI will be an expensive mistake, which will not make any improvement to South Africa\u2019s health system. Instead, it will paralyse the system.
