The Ekurhuleni Metro announced earlier this week, due to unrelenting pressure from AfriForum branches in the area, that the municipality will hire waste removal vehicles as part of a project to tackle the backlog of rubbish removal.

This follows after AfriForum contacted the municipality several times regarding complaints from the community about the backlog and poor service delivery of garbage removal. AfriForum’s branches in Kempton Park and Springs’ legal team then presented the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with a letter of demand on 2 February, requiring the municipality to resolve poor service delivery of rubbish removal and put forward an action plan.

The municipality hired 36 waste removal vehicles to restore the municipality’s fleet to capacity, as well as waste removal schedules to deal with the backlog. Tania Campbell, the mayor of the Ekuruhleni Metro, received the equipment on Monday 27 February.

“AfriForum welcomes the initiative and supports the project,” says Jurie Ferreira, District Coordinator for the East Rand.

“Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000 requires that waste management services be delivered to all local communities in a financially and environmentally responsible manner to promote the accessibility of basic services and sustainable waste management. AfriForum will monitor waste management in the East Rand by putting pressure on the municipality so that the community receives the services which they are entitled to,” says Petrus Coetzee, adviser for Local Government Affairs at AfriForum.
