AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in their respective areas of Gauteng participated in the civil rights organisation’s national patrol on 12 March 2021 in order to improve policing visibility. The patrol took place in cooperation with the SAPS, local community policing forums, community members, various security companies and other security role players.

A total of 548 AfriForum members and 390 other patrollers completed 22 533 km in 489 vehicles. The patrol started at 16:00 and continued until 06:00, during which the neighbourhood watches assisted in 102 incidents. They assisted in apprehending reckless and drunk drivers; at several motor vehicle accident scenes and various road blocks during which people were arrested for being in possession of drugs; and a case where two people were struck by lightning.

“Visibility plays a significant role in combatting crime and AfriForum’s Gauteng neighbourhood watches will continually launch projects and organise regular patrols to curb crime in cooperation with the SAPS and security institutions. We have also seen that cooperation with different role players contributes to deter criminals,” says Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum’s Provincial Safety Coordinator for Gauteng.

“AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches not only focus on visibility initiatives, but ensure that other projects take place to improve vigilance within communities. They also work towards establishing relationships with other role players,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety for the northern region.
