{"id":18595,"date":"2018-05-09T14:03:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-09T14:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lonelyviking.dev\/afriforum-slam-enormous-electricity-tariff-hike-public-hearing\/"},"modified":"2020-11-02T23:58:44","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T23:58:44","slug":"afriforum-slam-enormous-electricity-tariff-hike-public-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artikels.afriforum.co.za\/en\/afriforum-slam-enormous-electricity-tariff-hike-public-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"AfriForum to slam enormous electricity tariff hike at public\u00a0hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The civil rights organisation AfriForum will on Friday 11\u00a0May\u00a02018 give commentary on Eskom\u2019s latest application for tariff increases at the public\u00a0hearing\u00a0of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) in Soweto, Gauteng.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Eskom is looking for R67\u00a0billion in funding to compensate for unforeseen expenses and this can lead to a massive 35% increase in electricity prices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Morn\u00e9 Mostert, Head of Local Government Affairs at AfriForum, says this process is not supposed to be a corruption-funding strategy. \u201cOur presentation to Nersa will be broadly focussed on three aspects: Firstly, on corrupt activities at the electricity supplier; secondly, on Eskom\u2019s operational costs; and thirdly the general management of Eskom will also be discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mostert refers to how Eskom between 2007 and this year experienced runaway employment, while electricity sales remained largely the same and the economy grew at a snails\u2019 pace in the last year. Primary energy costs also skyrocketed and corruption, especially in terms of the purchase of coal, definitely played a role. \u201cNersa only takes into account prudently incurred primary energy expenses when they decide over tariff increases. There is plenty proof that indicates that the increase in primary energy costs over the past decade was extremely unjustified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, AfriForum also has in their sights on Nersa\u2019s plans to register, regulate and tax electricity generators and solar panels. \u201cWe will most definitely comment thereon and oppose it,\u201d says Mostert.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>AfriForum asks that you please add your voice to a petition to oppose this tariff increase.
