AfriForum\u2019s Oudtshoorn branch conducted safety audits at Laerskool Wesbank and Langenhoven Gimnasium last week to help tighten up the safety of these schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audit covers basic safety-related issues such as fencing, outdoor lighting and cameras. It is designed so that the school can use it to identify vulnerable areas and make the necessary improvements. The audit also enables a school to put contingency plans in place for different types of emergencies, such as fires, floods, violent protests or kidnappings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is of paramount importance that the children in our communities can go to school in a safe environment. Schools are often a soft target for opportunistic offenders and therefore it is important to be proactive. We cannot allow crime to gain a foothold in our community, which is why it is important for us at AfriForum to increase safety in our community as a whole and not just specifically in the various neighbourhoods,\u201d says Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum\u2019s district coordinator in the Southern Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AfriForum\u2019s Oudtshoorn neighbourhood watch also chased cable thieves out of one of the neighbourhoods last week. The neighbourhood watch consists of volunteers who pitch in to keep their community safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AfriForum encourages residents to become part of the branch\u2019s projects and work together to build a culture of self-reliance, responsibility and community pride. Schools can contact AfriForum if they are in need of a school safety audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
